The CRIS has been designed with the following architecture:
· Database Software: Microsoft Access 2000
· Office Software: Microsoft Office 2000 (Microsoft Word 2000 and Microsoft Excel 2000)
· GIS Software: ArcView 3.2
· Install Pack Software: InstallShield Express 3.03
Data Entry, Storage, Updating and Retrieval
A data dictionary was developed and implemented in Microsoft Access 2000. (The data dictionary is further described later in this section.) Future updates to the system can be made directly in Access 2000, either by using the CRIS edit menu forms, editing the necessary tables directly, or by using standard Access 2000 queries.
ArcView 3.2 has been used to store the spatial data. All of the polygon and line information has been stored as ArcView 3.2 shape files. Future updates to the line work associated with these shape files can be done outside of the system using any combination of GIS software packages that can produce shape files (e.g. ARC/INFO, Intergraph).
The primary tool for simple manipulation of attribute data from the CRIS database is Microsoft Excel 2000. Because of the strong inter-connectivity between Access 2000 and Excel 2000, it is possible to transfer data from the Access 2000 database into an Excel 2000 spreadsheet. Once the data are transferred to Excel, users can conduct their own analyses, generate graphs, etc. It is also possible for those responsible for providing updates of portions of the database (e.g. proponents, outside agencies) to provide this information to the database administrator in predetermined Excel formats.
For spatial data, users can display, query and print different map layers using a customized ArcView 3.2 interface. More advanced users will be able to use the full capabilities of ArcView 3.2 with the CRIS database.
The CRIS user version consists of the following files and folders, assuming installation into the default folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\CRIS), where <XXXX> is the name of the region (i.e. country or island) for which data are being installed:
C:\Program Files\CRIS\CRIS.MDE
· Read-only version of CRIS.MDB Access 2000 file.
· Installed only for user version of system. Note that for administrator’s version of system, this file will be replaced with C:\Program Files\CRIS\CRIS.MDB. This database file contains all the queries, forms, macros, modules, menubars, etc., and non-country specific data tables. It contains no country information, but all of the CRIS ‘application.’
C:\ Program Files\CRIS\<XXXX>
· Folder containing all program files relating specifically to region <XXXX>.
C:\Program Files\CRIS\<XXXX>\CRIS_<XXXX>.mdb
· The back-end CRIS database containing all the tables with data specific to region <XXXX>.
C:\ Program Files\CRIS\<XXXX>\AvData
· Folder containing ArcView project files and data for region <XXXX>.
C:\ Program Files\CRIS\<XXXX>\Templates
·
Folder containing all of the
Excel 2000 and Word 2000 formatting for region <XXXX> CRIS reports. Each
country can tailor the standard templates to better meet their particular needs,
or add their own.
