The Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring for Adaptive Management Course

05/14 - 06/16
Click here to view the brochure or visit their site at www.si.edu/simab

This intensive five-week SI/MAB course is a must for resource managers, ecologists, biologists, environmental educators and consultants. It is led by more than 40 internationally recognized instructors and speakers. The course is divided into eight modules, the first of which provides a framework for biodiversity assessment and monitoring, strengthened by a basic background in Geographical Information Systems and statistics. Six modules follow on assessment and monitoring of vegetation, aquatic systems, arthropods, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. The final module integrates the preceding seven and focuses on developing site-based multi-taxa monitoring for adaptive management.

The latest methodologies and approaches are presented through lectures, fieldwork, laboratory analyses and report preparation. Case studies, including examples from the Amazon rainforest of Peru, the Canadian Monitoring Network, Southeast Asia and Africa, highlight real-world applications of these tools.

INVESTMENT

Your investment of US$2,500.00 for the "Smithsonian Environmental Leadership" course includes your tuition, lodging, meals, local transportation and course materials. Airfares to and from Washington D.C. are not included.

LOCATION

Your learning experience for these courses will take place at the Smithsonian's Conservation & Research Center (CRC), where during the last 10 years, several hundred professionals have been trained. CRC is nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. The facility is situated on 3,150 rural acres bordering Shenandoah National Park, 60 miles west of Washington DC. During scheduled course breaks, you will be able to explore the city and the wilderness.

Quotes from past participants:

"How do you know when training is a success? The distinction in yourself...and I got it!"

Agung Wibowo - Natural Resource Manager, The Nature Conservancy, Indonesia

"Better than any corporate training that I've experienced in 24 years."

Joseph Donnaway - Health, Safety and Environment Manager, Mobil, U.S.

"...it was so enriching and motivating. It broadened my vision for solving environmental challenges. It is a course that all environmental leaders and campaigners need to attend."

Alex Obara, Biodiversity Consultant - Kenya

"The course was a gathering of leaders, leading 'green' leaders into the future. Every part of my being was tested - mind, body and soul - to help me create a better future for myself, my environment and my world."

Barbara Lawrence - External Affairs Officer, Shell International, London

"My career objective is to understand the ecology of tropical forest ecosystems and to help in their conservation. It is encouraging to know that I am not alone in this endeavor. This extraordinary program has and will help me achieve my lifetime goal more objectively."

Arun Srivastava - India

"When asked to give my impressions of the course upon my return home, I could only use positive superlatives...what with the expertise of the instructors and the very accommodating staff. I shall never forget the two most productive weeks of my life."
